I had to sneak my camera into the venue for this one. Luckily I know all the guards in Canberra and they were more than happy to let me in front of the barrier. I borrowed a mates 17-40mm f4.0 and got some awesomely sharp shots. This one caught the bass player from Kill Switch in mid flight. I love it.

So the first shot of 2008, was actually taken from a shoot on New Year’s Eve. I shot the Purple Sneakers NYE House party for FasterLouder.com.au, one of my regular haunts. You can find more shots on my Flickr and a link to the full gallery.

The lighting for the show wasn’t the best, as much of it was from the sides and the front lighting was not used.

This shot caught my attention because it is such a slight profile of Alex from Sparkardia. When looking at it, it is such a mysterious image, much like the sliver of a moon.

The Alice Cooper shoot was interesting, instead of the standard three songs, no flash, photographers were given four shots and told to knock themselves out with the flash. Unfortunately at this point in my photographic purchasing I did not own a flash, but the lights were so awesome that the piddly little on camera flash on my 400D would have just destroyed the shot.

Welcome to the web addled musings of the Box.

I really don’t want to turn this into a personal ad so here are the basics. I live in Canberra, I work as a teacher during the day and music website editor by night. I picked up photography as a way of getting closer to the artists I love and instantly became addicted. In 2007 I shot over fifty live shows and over the course of the year spent an inordinate amount of money on my hobby.

I’m not interested in becoming a professional photographer, photography is a way for me to show my appreciation to bands for their great music.

Throughout 2008 I’ll be uploading my best music photos to this site to showcase the work of many hardworking Australian musicians and bands. I will also be writing a bit about the shows to compliment the images.
This is the digital version of a visual diary that I plan on completing. It is a place for me to store memories of gigs past on the web…Enjoy!
